SWFLN Introduction to Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)

June 2 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Event Type: Face-to-Face
Date: 6/2/2017
Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Time: 4:00 PM

Description:
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) is one of the most widely-used controlled vocabularies in the world. Librarians in general (not just catalogers!) should have a solid understanding of how LCSH headings and subheadings are constructed and used in order to better serve users performing subject searches. This workshop will provide a brief history of LCSH, the principles behind its construction, as well as plenty of examples and hands-on activities so participants will gain a deeper understanding of LCSH and, in turn, utilize them more effectively to serve their users.

Academic Library staff will be interested in this workshop because LCSH is a very important and widely-used means of subject access to library resources. All academic librarians can better serve their users by understanding how LCSH is constructed and used in library catalogs.

Public Library staff will find this training beneficial because LCSH is a very important and widely-used means of subject access to library resources. All public librarians can better serve their users by understanding how LCSH is constructed and used in library catalogs.

School Librarians and Media Specialists will understand that LCSH is a very important and widely-used means of subject access to library resources. All school librarians can better serve their users by understanding how LCSH is constructed and used in library catalogs.
