Too often outreach becomes a formal process of meetings and mailings with little personal contact with the people in your community as individuals. Community-building starts with how each person who works for the library treats people inside and outside the library; it takes a little courage, some compassion, and a willingness to be patience, as well as genuine interest and respect for others. Topics include working definitions of community, practical tips for creating community in public meetings and organizations, how to model good community practices in how the library runs, and library services and programming that can build better communities in institutions, towns, and counties.
Pat has worked with community organizations in several states and likes to help libraries build community friendships. She has been a library consultant and trainer since 1978.
