Who Killed My Battery: Analyzing Mobile Browser Energy Consumption

Despite the explosive growth of smartphones and growing popularity of mobile web browsing, the energy consumed by a phone browser while surfing the web is poorly understood. While web pages are often optimized for speed and beauty, little attention is given to the amount of energy needed to download and render the page.

In this webcast presentation, we present an infrastructure for measuring the precise energy used by a mobile browser to render web pages. We then measure the energy needed to render financial, e-commerce, email, blogging, news and social networking sites. Our tools are sufficiently precise to measure the energy needed to render individual web elements, such as cascade style sheets (CSS), Javascript, images, and plug-in objects. Our results show that for popular sites, downloading and parsing cascade style sheets and Javascript consumes a significant fraction of the total energy needed to render the page. Using the data we collected we make concrete recommendations on how to design web pages so as to minimize the energy needed to render the page. We conclude by estimating the point at which offloading browser computations to a remote proxy can save energy on the phone. Our approach gives another dimension for evaluating mobile web sites and helps web developers build more energy efficient sites and improve user experience.

Introduction to CSS (SEFLIN)

This two-part online class will be held on May 23 and 30, 2013 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm. Students must attend both sessions.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) help describe basic design elements like colors and shapes, so that a webpage will display exactly as a Web designer wants it to appear on the Web.  Essentially, CSS helps give a webpage a distinct look and feel.

In this 2-part webinar you will:

  • Learn what CSS does and appreciate its importance in Web design
  • Recognize and use general CSS grammar (e.g., syntax, semantics, vocabulary)
  • Understand how to link a CSS file to an HTML document
  • Create a Web designers toolbox
  • Design a basic webpage using CSS

Participants will be given server space to create their own page.

Presented by: Chad Mairn, Novare Library Services
Registration deadline:  5/16/2013

Expanding Social Brand Engagement

Do you have the right strategies and processes in place to achieve your social engagement goals?

Brands in every industry have started to look beyond establishing a social presence and growing their audience. Now the name of the game is to drive meaningful engagement across an ever-expanding number of social properties. Broadband Adoption Toolkit

A webinar with the creators of the Broadband Adoption Toolkit discussing how to implement strategies for building digitally inclusive communities.

Increasing access and use of information technologies is essential for communities and individuals. Libraries, local government, community-based organizations and businesses are creating a variety of solutions. Building a digitally inclusive community requires multiple strategies, collaborations and creativity. Some digital inclusion strategies are referred to as “broadband adoption” which includes technology training, broadband awareness, low cost internet service and low cost home computers. In May, 2013, NTIA released the Broadband Adoption Toolkit (pdf). Join us for a conversation with the creators of the Broadband Adoption Toolkit to discuss what they learned and how the broadband adoption pieces fit together.

Presented by:

To help you get the most out of this webinar, we are also inviting representatives of the projects highlighted in the NTIA Broadband Adoption Toolkit to participate in the chat.

Conversations Across the Invisible Yellow Line – Board and Staff Roles

If you’ve ever watched a football game on television, you’ve seen the yellow line that appears on the screen, showing the placement of the next down. We can see it, but those on the field cannot. It’s invisible to the players. The same is true in many board and staff relationships. There is a yellow line that defines who does what, but it is invisible. This fast paced webinar will share some of the basic on both sides of the yellow line and suggest ways to make it less ‘invisible’ to the players in a nonprofit.

Takeaways:
-Clarification of basic board and staff roles in governance, financial management, human resources, resource development and more.
-Suggestions for effective ways to define roles of board and staff.

Jean Block has more than 45 years of experience in the nonprofit sector as both board and staff leader. She is now a nationally recognized consultant and trainer on nonprofit management, fundraising, social enterprise and board development. She has written two nonprofit resource books: Fast FUNdraising Facts for Fame & Fortune and The ABCs of Building Better Boards. Three more nonprofit resource books will be released in 2013.
Jean Block consulting, Inc. was formed in 1996 to allow Jean to share her considerable expertise in the nonprofit sector. Social Enterprise Ventures, LLC was formed in 2006 to focus on guiding nonprofits through the process to launch a social enterprise venture. The company now has nine senior consultant/trainers across the US.

Zero to App in Two Weeks

In working with top tier app partners, the Windows Ecosystem Team has seen developers produce an app in a little as two weeks, whereas others meander around for months with little to show. Why this discrepancy? What are the factors that make the difference between struggle and success? In this webcast, Kraig Brockschmidt will share the experiences that he and his team has gained from working with these partners to help you get your productivity in high gear for your own app-building efforts.

Kraig Brockschmidt has worked with Microsoft since 1988, focusing primarily on helping developers through writing, education, public speaking, and direct engagement. Kraig is currently a Senior Program Manager in the Windows Ecosystem team working directly with key partners on building Windows Store apps and bringing knowledge gained in that experience to the wider developer community. His most recent book is Programming Windows 8 Apps in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (a free ebook from Microsoft Press); his blog is kraigbrockschmidt.com/blog.

The Power of Web 2.0

This course will provide attendees with an overview of Web 2.0 tools available in FEL resources and how to utilize those tools to increase database usage and promote their home libraries. An overview of popular Web 2.0 websites will be provided as well. Discussion will include how to utilize these resources to increase library exposure and increase FEL usage.

We’ll also take a look at using www.galesites.com to create a new way to access FEL/Gale resources!

Julie Pepera, Customer Education Specialist, received her Bachelor in History from Albion College and her Masters in Information Science from the University of Michigan’s School of Information. She staffed the reference desks of several university libraries around the state of Michigan. Julie has also worked in the online community with organizations such as JSTOR and Google.

Julie has a passion for building the information literacy skills of patrons and students. In learning to use databases and eResources, people develop important skill sets that help them discern the value of information and make informed decisions. In a world where there is an overload of information, these skills are the key to being informed and judicious.

Julie hopes that all educators develop a proactive philosophy with their eResources rather than reacting to projects as they come and seeing the databases as a pile of information. Her lessons focus on helping participants understand the pieces of eResources so that librarians and teachers can direct people to the materials that are right for them. Below are just a few things that our customers are saying about Julie and her workshops:

•“Julie is a fantastic trainer, and her background in academic libraries helps her offer very practical suggestions on how and why to use the Gale databases.”
•“Julie was great! I am going to talk to my administration about what I learned and ways to implement it tomorrow.”
•“Julie was fabulous! She certainly has real-life examples of how to use this resource and why, since she was a librarian. I will definitely make sure that every teacher and the upper-grade students (elementary) in my building will know how to use this.”
