Keynote: Technology Trends 2018 and Beyond with Brian Pichman
Over the last few years, we’ve seen technology evolve in new and exciting ways. Join Brian Pichman of the Evolve Project as he highlights this year’s biggest technology trends and what those trends mean for libraries. What changes are we expecting to see in 2018, and what will be a fad, and what will be the hot tech everyone is talking about? From drones to virtual reality, to creating and innovating, and crazy new inventions — you’ll be left with lots of great ideas, how to stay informed, and how to prepare for what’s ahead.
Brian Pichman is the Director of Strategic Innovation at the Evolve Project. Much of Evolve’s work includes building innovative works geared towards interaction and collaboration and helping libraries bridge the digital divide, break away from traditional library views, and become trendsetters. Brian is dedicated to bringing libraries into the future using cost-effective measures and strategies. He often presents on innovative technology and loves collaborating with both libraries and companies. In his work with start-up companies around the world, he promotes libraries and encourages people to work closer with libraries when developing new ideas and concepts.
Implementing Security for Your Library with Brian Pichman
When we talk about security for your library, we should understand some of the tools people may use to harm your network and infrastructure. In this session, learn how hackers may hack and ways to protect yourself. IT security is more than just a buzzword; it’s a necessity to understand and implement the correct measures to keep you, your library, and your patrons safe.
Leveraging Start-Up Technology for Your Library and the Power of Slack with Brian Pichman
People talk about start-ups as lean, mean, fighting machines. Many start-ups and entrepreneurs use a slew of apps and technologies to fight cost, build collaboration, and accomplish big things — often with a small amount of money. Libraries can leverage a lot of these technologies and tricks to strengthen their teams and processes. This session will highlight these tools with an in-depth look at Slack as a powerful collaboration tool.
The Open Science Framework: Applications for Librarians with Renaine Julian
The Open Science Framework (OSF) is a free, open source web application that connects and supports the research workflow, enabling researchers to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their research. Researchers use the OSF to collaborate, document, archive, share, and register research projects, materials, and data. The OSF also has a preprint service which features complete public manuscripts from various academic disciplines, including Librarianship.
Attendees will learn about the OSF, it’s applications for research dissemination as well as project management. Attendees will also learn about OSF Preprints, specifically the LIS Scholarship Archive. This session will be of interest to academic librarians as well as public librarians interested in scientific education and programming.
Social Media Marketing with Sean Brosnan
An introduction to marketing on some of the most popular social media apps (Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn), as well as an explanation on what some of the terminology means and a walk-through on how to purchase ads or boost posts with very little money. There will also be a block of time for informal discussion. Attendees can have all their questions about social media answered!
Closing Session: Hands-On Tech Gadgets with Brian Pichman and Others
