Are you trying to teach more people about Online Library Resources? Want to enhance your Summer Reading Programs?
This onsite training workshop will provide attendees with an overview of the Gale Cengage Learning databases available through the Florida Electronic Library. With this understanding, users will then learn how to integrate these resources into Summer Reading programs. Strategies for introducing the resources to patrons and students will be discussed, as well as practical approaches for incorporating these skills and tools into Summer Reading Programs.
Attendees will come out of this session with:
•An overarching knowledge of each the FEL Gale databases and which databases would be best suited for different types of reference questions.
•A better understanding of how to use the Gale databases to answer real life reference questions.
•Sample scavenger hunts and exercises students can do to earn “reading” credit with the Summer Reading Programs.
•The ability to complete and create database scavenger hunts and exercises.
•New ideas for Summer Reading Projects and programs.

Julie Pepera, Customer Education Specialist, received her Bachelor in History from Albion College and her Masters in Information Science from the University of Michigan’s School of Information. She staffed the reference desks of several university libraries around the state of Michigan. Julie has also worked in the online community with organizations such as JSTOR and Google.
Julie has a passion for building the information literacy skills of patrons and students. In learning to use databases and eResources, people develop important skill sets that help them discern the value of information and make informed decisions. In a world where there is an overload of information, these skills are the key to being informed and judicious.
Julie hopes that all educators develop a proactive philosophy with their eResources rather than reacting to projects as they come and seeing the databases as a pile of information. Her lessons focus on helping participants understand the pieces of eResources so that librarians and teachers can direct people to the materials that are right for them.
