SWFLN Sharing Memories: Using Reminiscence Activities and Literature with Seniors

Explore multi-sensory approaches to remembrance, outline steps for developing activities and selecting materials, explore using volunteers in a new way, and learn tips for facilitating successful groups. When memories are shared in a group, a person’s experiences can add to a deeper understanding of our past – and perhaps our future.

Audience:

* Library staff who provide (or would like to provide activities for older adults;
* Library volunteers (and potential volunteers) who work with older adults.

Presenter: Tom Edwards and Kathy Mayo

Tom Edwards – Tom takes monthly reminiscence activities to the residents of senior facilities in the Asheville, North Carolina area. Humor is a hallmark of Tom’s programs and he will share his successful approaches to engaging Seniors in thoughtful discussion.

Kathy Mayo – Kathy is a retired Outreach Manager who now volunteers to coordinate Lee County Library System’s Community Conversations Project. The project trains volunteers to offer literature-based discussion groups with Seniors in assisted living facilities and adult daycare. Kathy is a frequent presenter at workshops for librarians and persons who work with Seniors.
